INTRODUCTION This book has explored the issues surrounding the use of CAA in higher education. It presents a picture of current activity and highlights not only the potential benefits but also the challenges and opportunities facing individual academics, departments and institutions. It is clear that a range of technologies, methodologies and pedagogies is being implemented to support CAA. There is a growing indication that CAA is increasingly being implemented with the primary purpose of motivating students and enhancing their learning. Chapters by Steven and Hesketh, Robinson and Sly and Rennie all demonstrate this. While emphasis is still placed on efficiency gains, it is evident that this is underpinned by the desire to provide valid and reliable assessments which motivate students to learn (see Sims Williams, et al). Furthermore, student views and anxieties are becoming increasingly important in the design and implementation of CAA (see Brosnan and Sambell et al).
